RESUMO

While chemotherapy treatment can be lifesaving, it also has adverse effects that negatively impact the quality of life. To investigate the effects of doxorubicin chemotherapy on body weight loss, strength and muscle mass loss, and physical function impairments, all key markers of cachexia, sarcopenia, and frailty. Seventeen C57/BL/6 mice were allocated into groups. 1) Control (n = 7): mice were exposed to intraperitoneal (i.p.) injections of saline solution. 2) Dox (n = 10): mice were exposed to doxorubicin chemotherapy cycles (total dose of 18 mg/kg divided over 15 days). The body weight loss and decreased food intake were monitored to assess cachexia. To assess sarcopenia, we measured muscle strength loss using a traction method and evaluated muscle atrophy through histology of the gastrocnemius muscle. To evaluate physical function impairments and assess frailty, we employed the open field test to measure exploratory capacity. Doxorubicin administration led to the development of cachexia, as evidenced by a significant body weight loss (13%) and a substantial decrease in food intake (34%) over a 15-day period. Furthermore, 90% of the mice treated with doxorubicin exhibited sarcopenia, characterized by a 20% reduction in traction strength (p<0,05), a 10% decrease in muscle mass, and a 33% reduction in locomotor activity. Importantly, all mice subjected to doxorubicin treatment were considered frail based on the evaluation of their overall condition and functional impairments. The proposed model holds significant characteristics of human chemotherapy treatment and can be useful to understand the intricate relationship between chemotherapy, cachexia, sarcopenia, and frailty.

BACKGROUND: Turning while walking is a complex component of locomotor capacity, which can be challenging in the daily lives of people with Parkinson's disease. The aim of the study was to compare biomechanical strategies during turning of gait in individuals with Parkinson's disease and its different clinical subtypes. METHODS: A cross-sectional study, comprising of 43 individuals with idiopathic Parkinson's disease, divided in subgroups: akineto-rigid, dominant tremor and mixed. Motor impairment was assessed using the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale. The gait biomechanical parameters (number of steps, step length, cadence, amplitude, velocity and radius of the turn) were analyzed during turning in a kinematics laboratory. In the statistical analysis, a comparison was made between subgroups, and correlations between biomechanical parameters. FINDINGS: There was no statistically significant difference between the subgroups. In the correlation analysis, notable correlations were found between the anticipatory step length and the following variables: number of steps (r = -0.418), step length while turning (r = 0.805), step length after turning (r = 0.644), average velocity (r = 0.830), average velocity while turning (r = 0.755), and maximum velocity (rho = 0.835). INTERPRETATION: The difficulties primarily occur during the anticipatory phase of the turn, which affects the entire task. The greater the length of the anticipatory step, the greater the length of the step taken to turn as well as the step taken after turning. And the greater the velocity, the greater the step length, and to fewer steps taken to perform the task.

Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a public health problem affecting millions of people worldwide. The intensity of the tibiofemoral contact forces is related to cartilage degeneration, and so is the importance of quantifying joint loads during daily activities. Although simulation with musculoskeletal models has been used to calculate joint loads, it demands high-cost equipment and a very time-consuming process. This study aimed to evaluate consolidated machine learning algorithms to predict tibiofemoral forces during gait analysis of healthy individuals and knee OA patients. Also, we evaluated three different datasets to train each model, considering different combinations of primary kinematic and kinetic data, and post-processing data. We evaluated 14 patients with severe unilateral knee OA and 14 healthy individuals during 3-5 gait trials. Data were split into 70% and 30% of the samples as training and test data. Test data was independently evaluated considering a mixture of pathological and healthy individuals, and only OA and Control patients. The main results showed that accurate predictions of the tibiofemoral contact forces were achieved using machine learning methods and that the predictions were sensitive to changes in the input data as training. The present study provided insights into the most promising regressions methods to predict knee contact forces representing an important starting point for the broader application of biomechanical analysis in clinical environments.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to develop a low-cost and personalized method for external breast prosthesis production. METHODS: The projected light method was used for the acquisition of the 3D geometry of the left breast of a healthy 29-year-old woman, 69 kg and 1.69 m. The 3D modeling software Blender was used to make the prosthesis model and mold with adjustments to the model's mesh, such as smoothing, assigning thickness, and creating the walls of the prosthesis mold. Two counter-molds were created. The pieces were manufactured on the 3D printer Stella Lite 3 using polylactic acid filament. Finally, the silicone was pigmented, and the mold was filled. FINDINGS: Prototype 1 of the prosthesis was produced using a mold without a counter-mold, which resulted in a prosthesis of 495 g, considered heavy compared to traditional prostheses for the same breast size. To solve this issue, a counter-mold with pins was used to produce prototype 2 with a mass of 393 g, 20.6% lighter than prototype 1. Prototype 3 was made with a central-volume counter-mold and presented a mass of 355 g, a reduction of 28.3% compared to prototype 1. The definitive breast prosthesis was made with the pin counter-mold with a different silicone. It has nipple and areola pigmentation and a mass of 294 g, 25.2% lighter than prototype 2. INTERPRETATION: The results suggest that the projected light method and additive manufacturing are potential tools for developing external breast prostheses, which may improve the health conditions and quality of life of mastectomized women.

This study aimed to observe the relationships between the maturity status on the network-based centrality measures of young athletes in small-sided soccer games (SSG). The study included 81 male players (14.4 ± 1.1 years). Measurements included height, sitting height, body mass, and bone age (TW3 method). The applied protocols were the following: Countermovement Jump (CMJ), Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test Level 1 (YYIRT1), Repeated Sprints Ability (RSA), observational analysis of techniques, and interactions performed by players in SSG. The relationship between the set of evaluated variables within each maturity status was obtained from the correlational analysis of networks (P < 0.05). The maturity status explained a significant portion of the variance in body mass (η2 = 0.37), height (η2 = 0.30), sitting height (η2 = 0.30), and performance on the YYIRT1 (η2 = 0.08), CMJ (η2 = 0.14), and RSA (η2 = 0.13). No effect of maturity status on network-based centrality measures of young athletes was identified (P > 0.05). For the late maturity group, there was a correlation between the degree of centrality and physical growth indicators (rmean = 0.88). For players with maturation "on time", physical growth indicators relate to the degree of prestige (rmean = 0.36). It is concluded that body size and bone age impact how late and on-time maturity groups interact within the match.

The purpose of this study was to characterise the interpersonal coordination between opponent players during offensive sequences in official matches and to verify if offensive sequences ended in shots to goal present different coordination patterns when compared than those that ended in defensive tackles. A total of 580 offensive sequences occurred during matches resulting in shots to goal (n = 172) or defensive tackles (n = 408) were analysed. The bidimensional coordinates and technical actions of male professional football players (n = 1160) were obtained using a video-based tracking system. Dyads were defined using a network analysis and composed of the nearest opponent. Interpersonal coordination of the dyads was analysed using the vector coding and the frequency for each coordination pattern was computed. In-phase was predominant for all displacement directions and offensive sequences outcomes, and antiphase was the least frequent. For lateral displacements, offensive sequences ending in shot to goal presented lower frequency for in-phase and higher frequency for offensive player phase than ended in defensive tackle. This information about the relationship of opponent players dyads during decisive moments of the matches provides fundamentals for future research and assists coaches to understand the different behaviours in successful and unsuccessful attacks.

Application methods of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in Parkinson's disease (PD) are quite divergent making it difficult to define the clinical effectiveness of the tDCS on PD. Thus, the aim of this study was to verify the acute effects of tDCS when applied to different targets (Cz or C3-Cz-C4) combined to physical therapy to improve balance and gait in individuals with PD. A randomized controlled trial was conducted, with 50 individuals who were separated into four groups: 1) Real tDCS (Cz) + physical therapy, 2) Real tDCS (C3-Cz-C4) + physical therapy, 3) Sham tDCS + physical therapy and 4) Educational lecture + physical therapy. The current intensity was 2 mA, applied for 20 min. For the instrumental assessment of balance and gait, the 3D motion analysis system was used. For the biomechanical analysis of gait, three different conditions were performed: normal gait, dual task gait and obstacle gait. For balance analysis, the following positions were utilized: Romberg with eyes opened, Romberg with eyes closed, Tandem with eyes opened and Tandem with eyes closed. All evaluations were performed pre-intervention, post-intervention (immediately at the end of the intervention) and were followed-up on (24 h after the end of the intervention). No statistically significant differences were found for all gait and balance outcomes when considering the interaction between time (pre, post and follow-up assessments) versus group (Education, Sham, Cz and C3-Cz-C4). In conclusion, it was found that one session of tDCS, stimulating Cz or C3-Cz-C4 combined with physical therapy, was not effective in improving the balance and gait in people with PD as compared to sham tDCS or educational lecture plus physiotherapy.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT The aim of this article is to explore the basic principles of Biomechanics in relation to the objective measurements carried out by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) operators and systems in soccer. It was presented an overall framework about the determination of kinematical variables, the definition and the sources of error, the understanding of factors contributing to errors in VAR decisions, and prospects for future solutions. To exemplify these concepts, the offside rule was chosen as it offers numerous instances of tools aiding for accurate measurements. Based on consolidated procedures of literature, a discussion about the actual challenges and an suggestions for a fully comprehension and improvement of VAR were provided.


RESUMO O objetivo deste artigo foi explorar os princípios básicos da Biomecânica em relação às medições objetivas realizadas pelos operadores e sistemas do Árbitro Assistente de Vídeo (VAR) no futebol. Foi apresentado uma estrutura geral sobre a determinação das variáveis ​​cinemáticas, a definição e as fontes de erro, a compreensão dos fatores que contribuem para os erros nas decisões do VAR e as perspectivas de soluções futuras. Para exemplificar esses conceitos, a regra do impedimento foi escolhida, pois oferece inúmeras instâncias de ferramentas que requerem medições acuradas. Com base em procedimentos consolidados da literatura, foram apresentadas discussões sobre os atuais desafios e sugestões para compreensão e aprimoramento completos do VAR.

In 2019, a new rule was applied in soccer. It allows the goalkeeper to have only one foot or part of it on the goal line when the kicker hits the ball, unlike the previous rule that determined the goalkeeper should have both feet on the line. The purpose of the present study was to analyze how the change in the rule and the lower limbs laterality influences on the diving save kinematic performance in penalties. Six goalkeepers, two professionals and four amateurs, performed a total of 20 dives in the laboratory and had their force and impulse exerted by the lower limb and displacement/velocity data from the center of body mass collected through force plates and kinematic analysis. The side preference was collected through an inventory. The results showed that goalkeepers dive further (p < 0.001) and faster (p < 0.001) when diving according to the new rule. Dives for the non-dominant side presented higher values than the trials for the dominant side in mediolateral (p = 0.02) and resultant (p = 0.03) displacements. Concluding, the goalkeepers performed better with the new rule in the analyzed variables and the lower limb preference has influenced only the mediolateral and resultant displacement.

Purpose: Although the role of signal transducers and activators of transcription (STAT3) in cachexia due to the association of circulating IL-6 and muscle wasting has been extensively demonstrated, the effect of resistance training on STAT3 in mediating muscle atrophy in tumor-bearing mice is unknown. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of resistance exercise training on inflammatory cytokines and oxidative-mediated STAT3 activation and muscle loss prevention in tumor-bearing mice. Methods: Male Swiss mice were inoculated with Ehrlich tumor cells and exposed or not exposed to resistance exercise protocol of ladder climbing. Skeletal muscle STAT3 protein content was measured, compared between groups, and tested for possible association with plasma interleukins and local oxidative stress markers. Components of the ubiquitin-proteasome and autophagy pathways were assessed by real-time PCR or immunoblotting. Results: Resistance training prevented STAT3 excessive activation in skeletal muscle mediated by the overabundance of plasma IL-6 and muscle oxidative stress. These mechanisms contributed to preventing the increased key genes and proteins of ubiquitin-proteasome and autophagy pathways in tumor-bearing mice, such as Atrogin-1, LC3B-II, and Beclin-1. Beyond preventing muscle atrophy, RT also prevented strength loss and impaired locomotor capacity, hallmarks of sarcopenia. Conclusion: Our results suggest that STAT3 inhibition is central in resistance exercise protective effects against cancer-induced muscle atrophy and strength loss.

BACKGROUND: This study compared the physical, physiological, and spatiotemporal responses of soccer athletes in small-sided games (SSG) in two experimental conditions: progression to the target rule (PG), in which they should take the ball to the opponent's endline to score points, and SSG with regular rules (RG), in which they should score goals to win the game. METHODS: Twenty U-20 athletes played both SSG formats. The SSG were played as four 4-minute bouts with four minutes of passive recovery in two consecutive days. Heart rate, physical (distances and accelerations), and positional data (length, width, and spatial exploration) were collected by a 10 hz GPS device and compared between the protocols using a MANOVA with Bonferroni's correction for multiple comparisons. RESULTS: Results showed that the RG condition demanded more spatial exploration eliciting greater occupation of the pitch width. There were higher mean and maximum heart rates and greater low-to-moderate distances and accelerations in the RG, while the PG rule increased the distances covered at the highest speed and acceleration zones. CONCLUSIONS: The progression to the target rule should be adopted to emphasize players' ability to use the width during the offensive phase. Additionally, the PG rule should also be used to emphasize the development of speed and acceleration skills.

We investigated the effects of caffeine mouth rinse on endurance performance, muscle recruitment (i.e., electromyographic activity of the vastus lateralis and rectus femoris), rating of perceived effort and heart rate. Twelve physically-active healthy men cycled at 80% of their respiratory compensation point until task failure. The participants rinsed their mouths for 10 seconds with placebo (PLA, 25 mL of a solution composed of non-caloric mint essence) or caffeine (CAF, 25 mL of 1.2% of anhydrous caffeine concentration with non-caloric mint essence) every 15 minutes of exercise. Time until exhaustion increased 17% (effect size = 0.70) in CAF compared to PLA (p = 0.04). The wavebands of low-frequency electromyographic activity (EMG) of the vastus lateralis and rectus femoris was lower in CAF group than PLA at 50% of the time until exhaustion (p = 0.04). The global EMG signal was lower in CAF group than PLA at 100% of the time until exhaustion (p = 0.001). The rating of perceived effort pooled was higher in CAF mouth rinse (p = 0.001) than PLA group. No effect was found on the heart rate between the groups (p > 0.05). Caffeine mouth rinse increases endurance performance, rating of perceived effort and decreases muscle activity during a moderate-intensity exercise.

Dominant regions are defined as regions of the pitch where a player can reach before any other and are commonly determined without considering the free-spaces in the pitch. We presented an approach to football players' dominant regions analysis, based on movement models created from players' positions, displacement, velocity, and acceleration vectors. 109 Brazilian male professional football players were analysed during official matches, computing over 15 million positional data obtained by video-based tracking system. Movement models were created based on players' instantaneous vectorial kinematics variables, then probabilities models and dominant regions were determined. Accuracy in determining dominant regions by the proposed model was tested for different time-lag windows. We calculated the areas of dominant, free-spaces, and Voronoi regions. Mean correct predictions of dominant region were 96.56%, 88.64%, and 72.31% for one, two, and three seconds, respectively. Dominant regions areas were lower than the ones computed by Voronoi, with median values of 73 and 171 m2, respectively. A median value of 5537 m2 was presented for free-space regions, representing a large part of the pitch. The proposed movement model proved to be more realistic, representing the match dynamics and can be a useful method to evaluate the players' tactical behaviours during matches.

The aim of this study was to evaluate different shape descriptors applied to images of polygons that represent the organization of football teams on the pitch. The effectiveness of different shape descriptors (area/perimeter, fractal area, circularity, maximum fractal, rectangularity, multiscale fractal curve-MFC), and the concatenation of all shape descriptors (except MFC), denominated Alldescriptors (AllD)) was evaluated and applied to polygons corresponding to the shapes represented by the convex hull obtained from players' 2D coordinates. A content-based image retrieval system (CBIR) was applied for 25 users (mean age of 31.9 ± 8.4 years) to evaluate the relevant images. Measures of effectiveness were used to evaluate the shape descriptors (P@n and R@n). The MFD (P@5, 0.46±0.37 and P@10, 0.40±0.31, p < 0.001; R@5, 0.14±0.13 and R@10, 0.24±0.19, p < 0.001) and AllD (P@5 = 0.43±0.36 and P@10 = 0.39±0.32, p < 0.001; R@5 = 0.13±0.11 and R@10 = 0.24±0.20, p < 0.001) descriptors presented higher values of effectiveness. As a practical demonstration, the best evaluated shape descriptor (MFC) was applied for tactical analysis of an official match. K-means clustering technique was applied, and different shapes of organization could be identified throughout the match. The MFC was the most effective shape descriptor in relation to all others, making it possible to apply this descriptor in the analysis of professional football matches.

The aim of the review was to identify the spatial tactical variables used to assess the use of space in team sports using positional data. In addition, we examined computational methods, performed a critical assessment and suggested future considerations. We considered four electronic databases. A total of 3973 documents were initially retrieved and only 15 articles suggested original spatial variables or different computation methods. Spatial team sport tactical variables can be classified into 3 principal types: occupied space, total field coverage by several players; exploration space, the mean location (±standard deviations in X- and Y-directions) of the player/team during the entire game; and dominant/influence space, the region the players can reach before any other players. Most of the studies, i.e., 55%, did not include goalkeepers (GKs) and total playing space to assess occupied space, however, several proposed new variables that considered that all playing space could be "played" (i.e. effective free-space, normalized surface area). Only a collective exploration space variable has been suggested: the major range of the geometrical centre (GC). This suggestion could be applied to assess collective exploration space variables at a sub-system level. The measurement of the dominant/influence space has been based on the Voronoi region (i.e. distance d criteria), but several studies also based their computation on the time (t). In addition, several weighted dominant areas have been suggested. In conclusion, the use of spatial collective tactical variables considering the principal structural traits of each team sport (e.g. players of both teams, the location of the space with respect to the goal, and the total playing space) is recommended.

Running is a modality that has a large number of adepts, including women. Therefore, it is important to understand how sportswear can help women, with special attention to the breast movement. The aim of this study was to analyse the effect of different combinations of breast support and footwear on the breast movement during walking and running. Twenty women performed treadmill walking (5 km/h) and running (7 and 10 km/h) combining different footwear (barefoot, minimalist, and traditional) and breast support conditions (bare breast, everyday bra, and sports bra). Three-dimensional data from breast and trunk markers were tracked for 10 stride cycles. Relative breast displacement was calculated and derived for velocity. An interaction effect was observed between support, footwear, and speed conditions. The bare breast conditions presented differences from the other conditions in the majority of the kinematic variables, presenting higher breast displacement and velocity values. On the other hand, the sports bra conditions presented the lowest values for the kinematics variables. In the vertical component of breast displacement during running (10 km/h) we verified that the sports bra presented reductions of 56% and 43% in relation to the bare breast and everyday bra conditions, respectively. Despite this, no differences were found between footwear within each breast support condition. A sports bra is efficient to decrease breast movement. In addition, neither of the tested footwear was able to decrease these movements.

The aim of this study was to explore the underlying bases of goal-scoring ability of junior soccer players. Male players (mean age 17.2 years, SD = 1.3) were recruited from an elite Brazilian football academy. We assessed each individual's dribbling and sprinting speed along five 30 m paths varying in curvature from 0 to 1.37 radians/m. We also quantified each player's ability to dribble the ball through a series of 15 cones using six different techniques. Dribbling, sprinting, and technical dribbling were then compared with an individual's goal-scoring ability as assessed when competing against one defender and a goalkeeper protecting a full-sized goal (N = 20-48 attempts/ individual). Goal-scoring success was significantly positively associated with their sprint speed (r = .60; P = .014), dribbling speed (r = .81; P < .0001), and technical dribbling (r = .49; P = .022). An individual's percentage of shots saved was only significantly associated with their dribbling speed (r = -.81; P < .001), with faster dribblers less likely to have their shots saved. Based on the full multivariate model for goal-scoring success (adjusted r2  = .60; P < .001), dribbling speed was the only significant correlate (t = 3.51; P < .001). Our study demonstrates that our metric of dribbling speed, as measured along curved paths, was associated with goal-scoring success. Future studies should focus on specific training regimes aimed at improving dribbling ability, and measuring any impact on the creation of goal-scoring opportunities and number of goals scored.

OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to evaluate the center of pressure (CoP) in individuals with chronic low back pain (LBP) compared with matched controls and perform discriminant analysis to detect which CoP variables differentiate the groups. METHODS: Thirty-two participants with LBP and 33 matched controls were evaluated on a force plate in a bipedal static position for 30 seconds in 2 conditions: eyes open (EO) and eyes closed (EC). Two discriminant analyzes were performed to detect which CoP variables could discriminate between groups. RESULTS: Those with LBP had higher values (ie, poorer balance) for most variables compared with the control group. With EO, total displacement of sway (TDS) was as follows: LBP group (median [25%-75%]) 31.77 (26.39-41.79) cm, control group 27.21 (22.29-31.78) cm, P = .008 and area: LBP group 3.31 (2.33-4.68) cm2, control group 1.77 (1.3-2.71) cm2. With EC, TDS was as follows: LBP group 49.6 (39.65-68.15) cm, control group 38.77 (30.36; 45.65) cm, P = .003 and area: LBP group 4.68 (2.6-7.28) cm2, control group 2.4 (2.1-3.34) cm2. The discriminating variables in the EO condition were the TDS for the LBP group and the anteroposterior mean velocity for the control group, while in the EC condition they were mediolateral dispersion and area for the LBP group. CONCLUSION: Individuals with chronic LBP had worse postural control performance than matched controls, and it is possible to characterize those with and without LBP with CoP variables.

The aim of the present study was to analyze the time series of team spread during futsal official matches in the frequency domain for different categories. Using an automatic tracking method, trajectories of 258 players (excluding goalkeepers) were obtained, composed of 79 players from the under-15 (U15) category, 86 from the under-18 (U18), and 93 from the professional. We calculated the team spread defined as the Euclidean norm of the distance-between-player vector as a function of time. We applied the Fast Fourier Transformation method and calculated the median frequency for each time series of spread. The results of mean ± SD of the median frequency of the time series of spread from the first to the second half were significantly different only for the U15 category (first half, 1.04 ± 0.46, second half 1.40 ± 0.34). The frequency values differed significantly between the categories. The younger categories presented a higher frequency of spread oscillation than the professional category, which reflects the dynamics of the game between attack and defense sequences. The results provide insights into the features of the sport and present a basis for appropriate training interventions for players in each category, planning for future transition to the following category.
